Grading:
Each student will receive two grade checks for each 6-weeks: the first one will be handed out between the 2nd & 3rd week of the grading period; the second grade check will be handed out between the 5th week and 6th week of the grading period. This is to ensure that students and parents always know current grades of all assignments. You can also check grades in a more timely, updated manner on synergy (see Oregon City School District page for Link). If you would like to sign up for synergy (our grade monitoring system that is accessible with internet), please contact the main office for a login.
Students receive one, A-F grades in my class each 6-weeks. I grade all assignments using a system called “proficiency-based grading”, meaning that everything is graded on a 4-point scale, in reference to how the student is progressing towards the standard:
1 (F): Does not meet proficiency in the standard: even with support, cannot show understanding
2 (D): Does not meet proficiency in the standard: Needs additional support to interpret content
2.5 (C): Nearly meets proficiency in the standard: Inconsistently interprets content
3 (B): Meets proficiency in the standard: Accurately interprets content; meets expectations
3.5 (A): Exceeds proficiency in the standard: Accurately/consistently interprets content
4 (A+): Masters the standard: Independently application of content is well-developed and supported; consistently above grade level
Late work:
Late work is accepted one day late at 50% off the practice assignment score. For example, if the student would originally earn a 3 on the assignment, but it was turned in the next day, then the score would be half of a 3, so 1.5. Exceptions will be made for excused absences, if the assignment has "ABSENT" written at the top and is turned in the next day the student is at school. If it is not turned in the next day the student comes to school after an absence, then it is considered late. After one day late, the assignment will be accepted for no points, but will be entered into the grade book as completed, so that it will not hinder a student from re-taking a mastery assessment/test. Each late assignment (no matter how late), needs to have a late form attached to it.
Re-Do Assignments
If the student did not score well on an assignment, they may re-do it for higher credit. These must be turned in before the mastery assessments (like end-of-unit tests). The must write "Re-do" at the top of the assignment in order for me to grade it and complete the re-do form. A re-do assignment is one that was originally turned in ON TIME, and was attempted (not blank or partially completed). Exceptions will be made for those students who stayed after for additional help and simply did not get as much help as was needed to complete the assignment fully.
Re-Do Tests:
If the student does not do well on a test, he/she may re-do the test once, but first I will check to make sure the student has NO missing practice assignments, before attempting to re-take a test. Then, the student must fill out a re-do request form. All re-do assignments/tests are due one full week before grading day.
Citizenship and Work Habits Grades:
Students will also receive a work habits grade based on homework and classwork completion, use of class time, tardiness, weekly binder checks, and preparedness; and a citizenship grade based on the student’s daily behavior with other. Students will be graded given an O-outstanding, S-satisfactory, N-needs improvement or U-unsatisfactory. I will be keeping track of these through in-class behaviors, and will be reporting these to parents at conferences.
